Mapping the E-Mail Deliverability Chain
Years ago, the e-mail delivery chain had just a few links. You loaded your e-mail and hit "send." After a couple handoffs, the message arrived in your recipient's inbox the way you sent it.Today, that chain has many more links. Some block your e-mail, others help it along. Deliverability has become a big issue for many e-mail senders. It even spawned this column.
HobbyPrincess: Just let them speak
(via)I have one thing to say to the organizers of technology conferences: if you want to make sure that you include the "female perspective" to your program, just invite women to speak about the things they're doing. Putting smart people to discuss under a separate "women & technology" category is not doing the job.
Vongo.com - Choose Now. Watch Now.
Vongo is a trial online media distribution scheme by the cable network Starz. For $9.95 a month, you can download any films from their library, storing them locally for viewing as long as you maintain your membership and Vongo retains rights to the film. It's like the new Napster meets Netflix. You can also PPV more recent movies that have just left the first-run houses and stream the Starz network to your desktop.
Laptop Virtuosos
The Princeton Laptop Orchestra, founded last fall, can, with "15 first-year students on Macs connected to custom omnidirectional speakers" emulate a full-fledged orchestra. "Or an electronica band. Or a jazz combo. It's easy when the conductor keeps time via network clocks precise to 20 milliseconds."

Lili (1953)
The earliest known appearance of the "smiley" emoticon, :-), was in an ad for this film in the New York Herald Tribune on 10 March 1953, page 20, columns 4-6. The film opened nationwide, and this ad possibly ran in many newspapers. It read: Today You'll laugh :-) You'll cry :-( You'll love <3 'Lili'" This should not be confused with the graphical yellow "smiley face", which was first drawn by Harvey Ball some 10 years later.
