.NET Architecture and Development Book Recommendations for 2012

Another year has gone by. Happy New Year everyone. It is time to update my book recommendation blog. There have been a ton of books come out this year both good and bad.

2011

Software Product Line Engineering Resource Kit

I recently decided to update the Product Line Engineering Assets I reuse from project to project. In the past I reused a baseline project that contained a folder structure and the UML stereotypes needed to do Use Cases, Feature, and Static Modeling.

Software Product Lines: Research Issues in Engineering and Management Book Review

Anyone considering venturing into Software Product Line Engineering should read this book. It contains essential information needed to succeed.

Moving Up the CMMI Capability and Maturity Levels Using Simulation

My team is currently in the process of purchasing simulation software for use with process engineering. This paper's release was perfect timing for us to show what we are trying to achieve with the new software.

2007

Cool Links III- .NET 3.0, 3.5, Acropolis, TFS, AJAX, Visual Studio 2008, CAB, WPF, Silverlight, WCF, SQL Server 2008

I posted a few sets of links a few months ago. Here is another list. There has been a ton of new info to keep up with. Topics - .NET 3.0, 3.5, Acropolis, TFS, AJAX, Visual Studio 2008, CAB, WPF, Silverlight, SQL Server 2008, Architecture, WCF, LINQ, MVP, Repository Factory, etc...

Eclipse Process Framework (EPF) Project, SPARX Enterprise Architect (EA), and ALM Enablement

A problem that I see with a lot of process instances (RUP, OpenUP, etc.) is that the templates provided are static word documents. I know that has been par for course over the years, but SPARX EA gives us a better option for Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) Enablement.

CrossTalk: The Journal of Defense Software Engineering

If you haven't checked out CrossTalk yet, I'd suggest you do. There are some great articles and the back issues can be downloaded.

Software Product Line Engineering and Variability Modeling of Software-intensive Systems (VaMoS)

The First International Workshop on Variability Modeling of Software-intensive Systems (VaMoS) has posted their proceedings and have made them available for free download. It covers a wide range of topics related to Software Product Line Engineering.

Product Line Engineering (PLE) UML Modeling Profile in Sparx Enterprise Architect (EA)

Product Line Engineering is at the heart of Microsoft's Software Factory movement. Although we have benefited greatly from the release of the Mobile Client Software Factory, the Smart Client Software Factory, the Web Client Software Factory, and the Web Service Software Factory, we still do not have any new tools to create our own. I am still defaulting to the UML Profile that has served me well in the past. This series cover the PLE UML profile and contains a Sparx EA template with the profile pre-loaded.

Thinking Software Development Process Implementation is Free means the Blind are Leading the Blind, but there are Ruby Slippers that may Help.

What makes people think a Software Development Process can be implemented in an organization at no upfront cost (including time and money)? Of course the number one culprit is lack of experience. The inexperienced have no understanding of what is involved in process engineering, and they usually have the belief that process is a luxurious overhead that is only to be thought about when there is complete downtime or during hours above billable hours.
